Project Overview
This project involved designing and developing a cloud-based software platform that brings together two core services, B2B e-commerce and logistics, into a single, scalable system. The objective was to give business organizations a digital space where they could manage wholesale trade, build buyer or supplier networks, and handle cargo shipment operations without relying on multiple disconnected systems.
The platform allows businesses to onboard quickly, manage their own branded workspace via subdomains, and operate in flexible user roles (like buyer, seller, shipper, or client). Whether a company needs just the commerce functionality, only logistics, or both, the platform is designed to meet them where they are and scale as they grow.
Industry
Logistics and Supply Chain
The solution was built for organizations involved in high-volume purchasing, sales, and distribution, companies that need streamlined operations, efficient communication with partners, and the ability to track and manage goods throughout the supply chain.
The Client
The client is a technology-focused organization that provides digital solutions for business service providers. Their mission was to enable smoother business transactions and logistics coordination, especially for companies operating across borders or dealing with multiple supply chain partners. They were looking for a platform that would reduce operational friction, simplify onboarding, and support future expansion.
Challenges Addressed
- Disconnected Business Systems: Many wholesale companies relied on separate tools, or in some cases, manual processes to manage buying, selling, and logistics. This created inefficiencies and made scaling difficult.
- One-Dimensional User Roles: In real business networks, a company may act as both a seller and a buyer, or a shipper and a client. Most systems didn’t allow for flexible, mixed-role user models.
- Slow, Manual Onboarding: Businesses were being onboarded manually through long processes, with little automation around verifying credentials and assigning access to specific services.
- Lack of Visibility in Logistics: Logistics activities like quote requests, shipment tracking, and service bookings were hard to track, especially when multiple partners were involved.
- Inefficient Communication: Buyers, sales agents, shippers, and consignees had no centralized way to communicate. Most conversations happened via email or external platforms, leading to delays and confusion.
Collaboration in Action
This was a team effort that spanned planning, design, development, and testing over multiple phases. The process included:
- Discovery & Planning: We worked closely with the client’s business analysts to map out every user journey, how buyers interact with sellers, how shippers handle quote requests, and how organizations onboard and launch their services. From this, we identified clear workflows and technical requirements.
- Agile Development Sprints: Each major component of the platform was built in dedicated sprints. We developed the identity portal, the admin console, the B2B commerce module, and the logistics system as modular units that could work independently or together.
- Real-World Testing: Sample accounts were created to represent different business types retailers, buyers, shippers, and consignees—and used to test onboarding flows, user permissions, and interactions between modules.
- Iterative Improvements: Throughout the project, feedback was continuously gathered from internal stakeholders and early testers. This helped refine the role system, simplify the subdomain launch process, and fine-tune how logistics workflows were triggered.
Technologies Deployed
- Frontend: React.js for a responsive, modular user interface
- Backend: Node.js and Express.js for business logic and API management
- Authentication: OAuth2-based identity platform for user and role access
- Infrastructure: Cloud-hosted microservices, with scalable deployment support
- Databases: MongoDB for flexible data structures, with SQL for transactional data
- Real-Time Messaging: WebSocket integration for live chat and notifications
- Admin Panel: Centralized dashboard for managing users, services, and organizations
- DevOps Tools: CI/CD pipelines for automating deployments, subdomain provisioning, and service rollouts
Innovative Features
- Flexible Role Architecture: Users can operate as buyers, sellers, or both. Similarly, companies can act as shippers, clients, or consignees, depending on the service they're using. This eliminates the need for separate accounts or tools for each role.
- Subdomain-Based Workspaces: Each business organization gets its own dedicated subdomain (e.g., yourcompany.platform.com) after being approved. Within that space, they can manage users, invite partners, and access only the services they've been granted.
- Negotiation Tools for Preorders: Unlike most e-commerce platforms, this one includes built-in preorder negotiation flows—allowing buyers to propose prices and terms before confirming bulk purchases.
- Logistics Partner Network: Businesses can manage a network of cargo partners, add freight services, automate rate calculations, and assign tracking info to shipments, all in one place.
- In-Platform Communication: Messaging tools allow buyers, sellers, and logistics partners to chat directly. No more waiting for emails or switching to external tools.
- Currency and Tax Localization: Retailers can set up multi-currency support, define region-based taxes, and apply bulk discounts, ideal for global commerce.
Value Delivered
- Faster Onboarding: Organizations can now go from signup to fully active in just a few steps, without relying on back-and-forth emails.
- Improved Collaboration: Sales agents, buyers, shippers, and consignees all work from the same platform, reducing miscommunication and duplicate work.
- Operational Flexibility: Businesses only use the services they need—either e-commerce, logistics, or both—and can switch or scale as needed.
- Time Savings: Tasks like order management, shipment tracking, and rate handling are now centralized and automated, saving hours of manual work.
- Better Transparency: The full history of quotes, bookings, orders, and messages is visible to users, improving accountability and decision-making.
User Feedback
“We loved that our organization could be both a retailer and a buyer—it’s how our business actually works, and now our tools reflect that.”
“Shipment tracking and quote management have become so much easier. Our partners know what’s happening at every step.”
“Launching our own subdomain gave us a sense of ownership. It feels like our own branded portal, not just another SaaS login.”
Conclusion
This platform successfully combines wholesale e-commerce and logistics into one flexible, easy-to-use system. It respects the way modern businesses operate—across multiple roles, with different partners, and often in multiple countries. From product listings to cargo tracking, it puts all the essential tools in one place and wraps them in a user-friendly, modular design.
Whether a business is just starting out or scaling fast, this solution gives them the control, flexibility, and efficiency they need to grow with confidence.
